A Memoir in Lyrics
These were the lines that hooked me
– touched deep nerves or freed me –
I can’t always say why or how.
I’ve laid them out
in the order they snared me
… such as I recall.

(Credits at end)

I read in the papers there are robbers
With flashlights that shine in the dark.
I do hope that doggie is for sale.

How I wonder what you are.
Up above the world so high
Like a diamond in the sky.

I’ve imagined I’m in love with you
Many many many times before.

You were always spoiled with a thousand toys but still you cried all night.

You know you made me cry
I see no use in wondering why
I cry for you.

I’ve got no time for you right now
Don’t bother me.

I can’t stay
Feeling like I do today.
Too much pain and too much sorrow.
Guess I’ll feel the same tomorrow.

At school they all stop and stare.
I can’t hide my feelings but I don’t care.
I’ll never forget you, the leader of the pack.

When I’m driving in my car and the man comes on the radio
Telling me more and more about some useless information.

Hope I die before I get old.

I just want you to know
I can see through your masks.
You that never done nothin’ but build to destroy
You play with my world like it’s your little toy.

You that build these altars now to sacrifice these children
You must not do it anymore.
For a scheme is not a vision
And you never have been tempted
By a demon or a god.

Father, I want to kill you.

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I were to say to you
Girl we couldn’t get much higher.

The sunshine reminds you of concreted skies.
You thought you were flying then you opened your eyes
And you found yourself falling back to yesterday’s lies.

Turn off your mind relax and float downstream.

Eight miles high and when you touch down.

When the truth is found to be lies
And all the joy within you dies
Don’t you want somebody to love?

Ah but I may as well try and catch the wind.

And a rock feels no pain. And an island never cries.

And just when you want to tell her that you have no love to give her
She gets you on her wavelength and lets the river answer
That you’ve always been her lover.

Walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme.
You know my love goes with you as your love stays with me.

Just walk away, Renee
You won’t see me follow you back home.
The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same.
You’re not to blame.

So long, Maryanne
It’s time that we began
To laugh and cry
And cry and laugh about it all again.

Sometimes I’m overcome thinking about
Making love on the green grass
Behind the stadium
With you, my brown eyed girl.

Hello darkness my old friend.
I’ve come to talk with you again.

It seems so long ago
None of us were strong
Nancy wore green stockings
And she slept with everyone.

Living on reds and vitamin C and cocaine
All her friends are saying ‘Ain’t it a shame’.

Don’t bother looking, you’re too blind to see.
Who’s coming on like he wanted to be?
Who’s saying baby that don’t mean a thing?
‘Cuz nowadays Clancy can’t even sing.

There’s something happening here.
What it is ain’t exactly clear.

Good and bad I defined these terms
Quite clear no doubt somehow
Ah but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now.

All lies in jest
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest.

He was playing real good for free
Now me I play for fortunes
Or those velvet curtain calls

When I think of all the worries
People seem to find
And how they’re in a hurry
To complicate their minds.

Listening to you I get the music
Gazing at you I get the heat.

I am on a lonely road
And I am traveling traveling traveling traveling.

I know from your eyes
And I know from your smile
That tonight will be fine will be fine will be fine
For a while.

His clothes are dirty but his hands are clean
And you’re the best thing that he’s ever seen.

The silver saxophones say I should refuse you
The cracked bells and washed out horns
Blow into my face with scorn
But it’s not that way I wasn’t born to lose you.

Like a bird on the wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.

I’ll be what I am
A solitary man

I’m sittin’ on the dock of the bay
Watchin’ the tide roll away.

And if I have been unkind
I hope that you can just let it go by
And if I have been untrue
I hope you know
It was never to you.

I’ve seen lonely times that I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I’d see you again.

She walks these hills in her long black veil
Nobody knows, nobody sees
Nobody knows but me.

If you’re traveling in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true friend of mine.

When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.

When you feel lost and about to give up
Because your best just ain’t good enough
Reach out (reach out for me).

He said I feel once again like I gave my heart too soon.
He stood looking through the lace
At the face on the conquered moon.

Songs are like tattoos you know I’ve been this way before.

Maybe we really belong together
But after all
How little we know.

Couple in the next room
Bound to win a prize
They’ve been going at it all night long.

Hey kid, you think that’s oil?
Man, that ain’t oil, it’s blood.

Did you hear the cops finally busted Madam Marie
For telling fortunes better than they do.
For me this boardwalk life is through, babe.
You ought to quit this scene too.

To her Cheshire smile I’ll stand on file
She’s all I ever wanted.

Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that’s me and I want you only.

I think I really dug her ‘cuz I was too loose to fake.

Show a little faith there’s magic in the night.

And after all this time to find we’re just like all the rest.

Hey, Lord, don’t ask me questions!
Ain’t no answers in me.

Why in the world are we here?
Surely not to live in pain and fear.

Outside of society they’re waiting for me.
Outside of society that’s where I want to be.

I’m gonna make you make you make you make you notice me.

Baby was a black sheep, baby was a whore
You know she got big, well, she’s gonna get bigger.

Don’t know what I want but I know how to get it.

People say “beware”
But I don’t care
Their words are just
Rules and regulations to me.

The world’s a mess it’s in my kiss.

You say you lost your faith
But that’s not where it’s at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it.

Is this the UDA?
Or is this the IRA?
I thought it was the UK
Or just another country.

Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine.

I am an anti-Christ
I am an anarchist.

But you’re still fucking peasants as far as I can see.

Nothing means nothing anymore.

Race against time is what I’m into
Pay now and get through.

It’s alright if you love me
It’s alright if you don’t.

I know what’s on your mind
But what’s in your heart?

I don’t mind you coming here
And wasting all my time.

I am the hungry wolf
And I run endlessly with my mate.

Everybody’s had to fight to be free.
You don’t have to live like a refugee.

Let’s not talk, honey, let’s just start.

I don’t wanna get over you
It doesn’t matter what you do.

I’m a fool, so I’m told.
I get left in the cold.
I will search the world.
For that fool’s gold.

The love of a lifetime
Is not impossible.
Around every corner
could be someone special.

Well I can still remember
A couple of years ago
When the smoke and flame called my name
It was a burning house of love.

When after all the urges
Some kind of truth emerges.

Deception
I can see it in your eyes.
Deception
Lies lies lies.

I just can’t stand it
The way you’re always running around.

Tell me you believe it
And I will believe it too.

And all I have to do is focus
And I can see so clearly.
All I have to do is focus.
You’re gonna pay for it and dearly.

There’s nothing to hold onto
When gravity betrays you

Nobody told me about times like these.
Somebody tell me about times like these.

It worked much better in a fantasy
Imagination’s one thing that comes easy to me.

She looked at him and he felt a spark
Tingle to his bones
‘Twas then he felt alone.

Now those memories come back to haunt me
They haunt me like a curse.
Is a dream a lie if it don’t come true
Or is it something worse?

I saw a picture of you
(Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh)
Those were the happiest days of my life.

Sundown, yellow moon, I replay the past,
I know every scene by heart,
They all went by so fast.

I loved you, well, never mind.

She had to get out (get out!)
Get out (get out!)
Get out (get out!)

It’s better to burn out
Than it is to rust.

You’ve got to live it every day
Let the broken hearts stand for the price you gotta pay.

Sometimes I feel so weak I just wanna explode.
Explode and tear this old town apart.
Take a knife and cut this pain from my heart.
Find somebody itchin’ for somethin’ to start.

Look me in the eye and tell me I’m satisfied.
Are you satisfied?

Yeah, I hear you think it’s weird
But I don’t give a single shit.

She goes ‘No you’re not thinking, you’re on drugs.
Normal people don’t act that way.’
I go ‘Mom just give me a Pepsi, please!’
All I wanted was a Pepsi but she wouldn’t give it to me.

God what a mess!
On the ladder of success
You take one step
And you miss the whole first rung.

The dogs on main street howl
Because they understand
If I could take one moment into my hand.

The ones who love us least
Are the ones we’ll die to please.
If it’s any consolation
I don’t pretend to understand.

New day rising.
New day rising.
New day rising.
New day rising.

If I don’t see you for a long long while,
I’ll try to find you left of the dial.

Time is a jet plane, it moves too fast.

There was a time
When the sun shined,
Played in your soft blond hair,
Reflected in your golden eyes.
You leaned back your head and you laughed
About tomorrow.

If you’re lost you can look and you will find me,
Time after time.
If you fall I will catch you – I will be waiting,
Time after time.

You make me feel so brand new
I want to spend my life with you.

Try and breathe some life into a letter
Losing hope we’ll ever be together.

I can’t live without your touch
I could die within your reach.

Lights that flash in the evening
Through a hole in the drapes.
I’ll be home when I’m sleeping.
I can’t hardly wait.

Feel like a hundred bucks
Exchange good lucks face to face.

People tell me it’s a sin
To know and feel too much within.

And I’ve never gotten used to it
I’ve just learned to turn it off.

There are things I’d like to say
But I’m never talking to you again.

They get what they want
And they never want it again.

But you see it’s not me
It’s not my family
In your head, in your head
They are fighting

Letting the days go by
Let the water hold me down.
Letting the days go by
Water flowing underground.

And the rain came in from the wide blue yonder
Through all the stages I wandered.

I am just a dreamer
But you are just a dream
You could have been
Anyone to me.

We wrapped our bloody fingers
Like a shine-eyed mister zen.

Tommy wrote a letter to the office of iniquity
Demanding a history of his actions.
But the letter was returned just two days gone
There was no office of iniquity.

Sometimes I live in the country
Sometimes I live in the town
Sometimes I have a great notion
To jump in the river and drown.

Bird on the horizon, sittin’ on a fence
He’s singing this song for me at his own expense.
And I’m just like that bird.
Singing just for you.

I meant to lift him up not tie him down.

Snow falls on the Hudson
Souls are lost by the lonely dozen.
She was here and then she wasn’t.

That first summer seemed so far away
But I’m still here and not afraid.

In my dreams I’m horsebacking
Ridin’ with the wind.

And I won’t call it rescue.
What brought me back here to this old world to drink and decline.
Pretend that the search for another new world
Was well worth the burning of mine.

Full of such blind rage I need a seeing eye dog.
Can’t even find the page I was writing this rhyme on.
Oh – it’s on a ram-page.
Couldn’t see what I wrote (I write small).

I see your colors
You took some chances.
Now the silence is your friend
As will I be in the end.

Don’t want to hear about it.
Every single one’s got a story to tell.
Everyone knows about it.
From the queen of England to the hounds of hell.

I hate to walk behind
Other people’s ambition.

Every junkie’s like a setting sun.

I’ve been asked for words of wisdom more than once or twice.
Tell us about the good ol’ days, tell us about your life.
Well I’ve just got one thing to say:
You get smart way too late.

Leave alone
You don’t belong here.
Slip out quietly
No one is looking.

I’m on the right track
Baby I was born this way.

Oh, the wind
Has touched me once again.

He got nervous
Started whistling
Every thought a ricochet
Did you notice?
Well I wonder
What’s the worst thing I could say?

Dressed in captivating eyes
With that denim on your thighs.

Y libre sueño.
This is where I belong.

To be lonely is a habit
Like smoking or taking drugs.
And I’ve quit them both
But man, it was rough.

We knew this could all go away
But not today.

I’ve been afraid of changing
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you.
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older.
I’m getting older, too.

Mommy’s alright
Daddy’s alright
They just seem a little weird.
Surrender, surrender,
But don’t give yourself away.

Who on earth do you think you are?
A superstar?
Well how right you are!
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun.

If the whiskey don’t kill me
I don’t know what will.

Just remember
He’s some mother’s precious darling
Always lift him up
And never knock him down.

Out came the sun and dried up all the rain
And the itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again.

Just a little more time, with you
With me, with you
Just a little more time.

Merrily merrily merrily merrily
Life is but a dream.

And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin’ coals
Pourin’ off of every page
Like it was written in my soul
From me to you.

There’s a blaze of light in every word
It doesn’t matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
